“Your invoice is overdue”: how to say it politely
Why it can fall flat
“your invoice is overdue”
“Overdue” lands like a verdict, so when a payment slips past its date, saying “your invoice is overdue” can read as an accusation and put the other person on guard. Most of the time you simply want to be paid, or to learn quickly what is holding it up.

What to avoid
- Opening with “You still haven't paid” blames the person before you know the reason.
- Vague wording such as “whenever you can” gives the reader no date to act on.
- Sarcasm or all capital letters make people defend themselves instead of paying.
- Chasing through several channels on the same day feels like pressure and clutters the thread.
- Leaving out the invoice number, amount and due date forces the other person to go and look them up.
