Better ways to say “you owe us money”
Why it can fall flat
“you owe us money”
Most people hear it as an accusation and a demand, so they get defensive even when the delay was an honest oversight. The writer simply wants to be paid, which a clear fact and next step achieve better.

What to avoid
- Opening with blame, such as “you failed to pay”, when you don't know why the payment is late.
- Vague requests like “please settle this soon” leave the reader guessing, so give a date or a deadline.
- Threats or hints of consequences you haven't decided to follow through on only damage trust.
- Writing a reminder while you're upset rarely helps, so wait and then stick to the invoice number, amount and due date.
- Leaving out the invoice or payment details forces the reader to come back and ask you for them.
