A kinder way to say “I'm not sure”
Why it can fall flat
“I'm not sure”
A listener who hears “I'm not sure” cold may take it as vague or uncommitted, with nothing they can act on. Most of the time you only lack one piece of information and plan to get it.

I can't choose between the two suppliers yet. The final quote is due tomorrow; I'll share a recommendation then.
What to avoid
- Stopping at “I'm not sure” and leaving out what happens next or when.
- Presenting a guess as if it were a fact.
- Stacking hedges such as “maybe”, “I think” and “possibly” in a single message.
- Promising a follow-up time that you may not be able to meet.
- With a client or customer, replace “no idea” with a clear statement of what you need to check.
