Better ways to say “Do you have any work for me?”
Why it can fall flat
“Do you have any work for me?”
Your manager may hear that you have nothing to do and end up inventing tasks for you. Usually you just want to say you have capacity and can take on something useful.
Say this instead
- 01
I've finished the client deck and have room this week. Is there anything you'd like me to pick up next?
Boss · Chat
Use this right after finishing a task, since it shows what you've done and gives your manager a clear, easy question.
- 02
Hi Tamara, my current tasks are on track and I have time over the next few days. What would be most useful for me to take on?
Boss · Email
Asking what is most useful lets your boss set priorities instead of handing you just anything.
- 03
Hi Tamara, I'm free from 2pm today. Anything you'd like me to pick up? Happy to take something small or start something bigger.
Boss · SMS
This suits a quick, low-pressure offer when you're away from your desk or working remotely.
- 04
I've got some spare time this afternoon. Want me to take anything off your plate?
Coworker · Chat
Naming the afternoon makes the offer specific, so a busy colleague can hand something over fast.
- 05
Hi Felix, I have capacity next week. If there's anything else on the project you'd like me to pick up, let me know and we can agree the scope and timing.
Client · Email
A client sees your availability without any hint of desperation, and scope and timing stay open for discussion.
- 06
I have a bit of time this week. Is there anything on your list I can help with or help unblock?
Someone you manage · Chat
Someone you manage learns you can take on work or clear obstacles instead of waiting to be asked.
- 07
I'm open to new contract work from March 1. If you have any roles that match my background, please send the details.
Recruiter / HR · Email
Giving your start date and what you want tells a recruiter exactly when to contact you.
- 08
Hi Mr. Johnson, I have a few openings next week. If there's anything else you'd like done, just reply and we'll set a time.
Customer · SMS
A returning customer can reply easily and won't feel pushed, which suits a service provider.
Examples
Hi Zoe, I've sent the final slides for Thursday's review, and my other tasks are on track. I have about two days free this week. Is there something you'd like me to pick up, or a project I could support? Thanks, Mikhail
Hi Sasha, I've wrapped up the invoice checks and have the afternoon free. Is there anything I can take on, or help you with?
What to avoid
- Starting a conversation with it as a greeting is a mistake, so say what you've finished first.
- Jokes like “I'm bored” or “I've got nothing to do” can come across as a complaint.
- Say roughly how much time you have and when, so the other person can answer easily.
- Asking the same person every day gets tiresome, so check the team's task list or board first.
- Offering more time than you really have sets you up to miss what you promised.
