A kinder way to say “the salary is too low”
Why it can fall flat
“the salary is too low”
Saying “the salary is too low” flatly can end the conversation right there, because it gives the other person a verdict and no question to answer. A better move is to say the pay doesn't fit the role, then open a discussion about how to change it.

Thank you for the details. The salary is below what I'm looking for in this role. Is there any flexibility on the range?
Recruiter / HR · Email
Fits after a first offer or range arrives, because it names the gap and then asks a question instead of closing the talks.

Thanks for the offer details. The pay is below my range for this role. If there's room to move on salary, I'm happy to talk further.
Recruiter / HR · SMS
Suits a quick reply to a recruiter who texts a figure, since it stays short and firm but leaves the door open.
- 03
Appreciate you reaching out. Before we go further: the range you've shared is lower than I'd need at this level. What's the top of the band?
Recruiter / HR · Chat
Early in a networking-site chat, it spares both sides time on a role that can't work out.

Hi Cameron, I'd like to talk about my salary. With my current responsibilities, I feel it no longer reflects the work I'm doing. Could we find time this week?
Boss · Email
This opens a pay conversation with your boss and no ultimatum, giving your scope of work as the reason and asking for a meeting.
- 05
Do you have 20 minutes this week to discuss my pay? I'd like to go through how it compares with the scope of my role now.
Boss · Chat
A manager you talk with often can use this one, as it asks for time and names the topic so they can prepare.

I checked the posting for that role. The pay is lower than I'd want for the workload, so I'm passing. Worth checking the range before you apply.
Coworker · Chat
Helpful when a colleague asks what you think of a job, since it gives your honest view without drama.

I'm interested in the role, but the base salary is below what I need. I'd like to continue if we can look at a higher figure. What can you do?
Recruiter / HR · Email
Pick this when you want the job but pay is the obstacle, because it keeps talks going and asks for a better offer.
Examples
Hi Sneha, Thank you for sending the offer. I'm excited about the role, but the base salary is lower than I was expecting for this level of responsibility. Is there room to revisit it? I'd like to find a figure that works for both of us. Best regards, Swati
Hi Imran, could we set up 20 minutes this week to talk about my pay? I'd like to walk through how my role has grown and where my salary sits against it.
What to avoid
- Saying only that it's “not enough” leaves your reader guessing, so give a reason such as scope, experience or workload.
- Ultimatums backfire unless you are genuinely ready to walk away.
- Using a named colleague's pay as your argument puts that person in an awkward spot and weakens your case.
- Apologizing for raising the topic undercuts you, since you are asking a normal question.
- Anger tends to leak into the wording, so wait until you can state the gap calmly.
