Saying “that's a dumb question” at work

Why it can fall flat

“that's a dumb question”

Listeners take it as a jab at their intelligence, so they may stop asking even when the question matters. What you likely mean is that the answer is already on record or that the question won't move the work forward.

Say this instead

  1. 01

That one's covered in the onboarding doc, section 2. Have a read, and tell me if anything is still unclear after that.

    Someone you manage · Chat

Use this when the answer is written down somewhere, since it points to the source and still invites a follow-up.

  2. 02

I think we settled that in Tuesday's meeting: we agreed to ship on Friday. Has something changed that makes you want to reopen it?

    Coworker · Chat

Try it when a decision was already made, because it reminds without blaming and asks for new information.

  3. 03

Hi Hannah, Thanks for asking. Section 4 of the agreement covers this: invoices are due within 30 days of the invoice date. Happy to talk it through if useful. Best, Kerry

    Client · Email

This suits a question a contract or document already answers, as it stays polite and cites the exact place.

  4. 04

I'm not sure that question gets us closer to a decision. Could we look at the budget limit first? I think it settles most of this.

    Boss · Chat

Reach for it in a discussion that is drifting, because it redirects to what matters without criticizing anyone.

  5. 05

Hi Finley, the answer is in the confirmation email we sent on Monday. Please check it, and message me if anything is still unclear.

    Customer · SMS

It fits when the information has already been sent, since it is short, friendly and leaves the door open.

Hello Ms. Rao, That detail is on my CV under my 2022 role. If there is something specific missing there, tell me and I'll fill in the gap. Regards, Jordan

    Recruiter / HR · Email

Send it when a recruiter asks something your CV already covers, because it points back to it and offers more.

That's easy to find in the shared tracker. Check the Status column, and ping me if it doesn't answer it.

    Coworker · SMS

This one suits a quick lookup question when you're busy, as it gives the exact place and offers backup.

Hi Brandon, Thanks for your message. The delivery date is in the project plan we shared on March 3, which lists March 28 for the first release. If you've seen a different date somewhere, send it over and I'll check it against the plan. Kind regards, Stephanie

Good question to confirm, but I believe it's in the handbook under expenses. Take a look, and if it's still unclear, message me and we'll go through it.

What to avoid

  • Labeling the question or the person with words like dumb, silly or obvious.
  • Answering with a sigh, an eye-roll emoji or a one-word reply like “Seriously?”
  • Saying “As I already told you” without also saying where the answer is.
  • Correcting someone in front of a group when a private message would do.
  • Using “there are no dumb questions” sarcastically, because people notice.
