Better ways to say “you haven't responded”

Why it can fall flat

“you haven't responded”

It leaves out any reason for the request and makes the message about the other person's silence, which can read as an accusation. Usually you just want a reply, decision or update so your work can move.

Say this instead

  1. 01

Hi, just checking you saw my message about the budget sign-off. Could you let me know by Thursday so I can keep the plan on track?

    Boss · Chat

Suits a boss because it ties the request to a clear deadline instead of pointing at the silence.

  2. 02

Quick nudge on the vendor list I sent Monday. I'm holding the draft until I have your numbers, so even a rough figure would help.

    Coworker · Chat

Peers respond well here since you explain why you're asking and make a rough answer enough.

  3. 03

Hello Malik, I'm following up on the proofs I sent last week. Once I have your approval, I can book the print slot. Could you confirm by Friday?

    Client · Email

Clients get a clear picture because the message names your next step and the date you need.

  4. 04

Can you send me a short update on the timesheet report today? I'd like to see where it stands before our 3 pm check-in.

    Someone you manage · Chat

Direct and clear about timing, this fits someone you manage and avoids any hint of a reprimand.

  5. 05

Hi, I wanted to follow up on my application for the analyst role. I'm still very interested and would appreciate an update on timing when you have one.

    Recruiter / HR · Email

Send it a week or so after the expected reply date, since it stays interested and not impatient.

  6. 06

Hi, we still need your OK on the repair quote to book your visit. Reply YES to confirm, or call us if you have any questions.

    Customer · SMS

Customers find it easy because replying takes one word and the booking is the only thing waiting.

  7. 07

I'm resending my earlier message in case it got buried. I need your input on the launch checklist by Wednesday to stay on schedule.

    Coworker · Email

Resending the message gives the other person a face-saving reason for the silence, so nobody feels blamed.

Hi Malik, I'm following up on the delivery schedule I sent last Tuesday. I can't confirm the date with the warehouse until I have your approval. Could you reply by Friday noon so we can hold the slot? Thanks, Ellie

Hi Manish, checking on the invoice figures I asked about on Monday. I'm holding the summary until I have them, so a quick reply today would keep us on track.

What to avoid

  • Openers like “As I already said” or “Per my last email” read as pointed, so leave them out.
  • Guessing why they're silent, or remarking on how busy or careless they are, will make things worse.
  • A request that lacks what you need and by when gives the reader nothing to act on.
  • Several nudges across different channels within hours feel like pressure.
  • An apology you don't owe, added just to soften the request, weakens your message.
