How to say “you forgot to pay” professionally
Why it can fall flat
“you forgot to pay”
Most people hear “you forgot to pay” as an accusation of carelessness, so they get defensive, even when a system error or small slip caused the delay. You just want to be paid, and stating facts with a clear next step gets you there faster.

What to avoid
- Don't open with blame, such as “you forgot” or “you still haven't”, and start with the invoice number, date and amount instead.
- Sarcasm or hints like “as I'm sure you know” sour the relationship and won't speed up payment.
- Leaving the next step vague gives the other person no reason to act, so ask for a specific date or confirmation.
- Threats of consequences belong later, not in a first reminder, unless you have already followed up more than once.
