A kinder way to say “stay in your lane”
Why it can fall flat
“stay in your lane”
Listeners hear that they have no right to weigh in, so a simple disagreement turns into a fight over rank. A clearer path is to state who owns the decision and where their input fits.

I've got this one and I'll make the final call on it. If you want to weigh in, the next review is the right place to do it.
Coworker · Chat
Use it when a peer keeps pushing on something you own, since it names the owner and gives their input a place to go.

I think this sits with the platform team, so the best route is to raise it with them through their usual request process. I'll stay on the launch work.
Coworker · Email
Try it when someone wants you to fix or decide something that belongs to another team, because it hands the issue to the right owner.

Could you confirm that I own the vendor decision? Noor has been suggesting changes, and I want us all working from the same understanding.
Boss · Chat
Send it when a peer keeps stepping into your area and you want your manager to confirm ownership instead of arguing it yourself.

Your input on goals and deadlines is really useful. How we build it is our call as the delivery team, and we'll keep to that approach.
Client · Email
Pick it when a client starts directing how the work is done, since it values their role while keeping the method with your team.

I appreciate that you care about the whole project. For now, please keep your focus on the reporting tasks. The staffing questions are mine to handle.
Someone you manage · Chat
Managers can use it when a team member keeps commenting on decisions outside their remit, because it is kind but clear.

Thanks for the suggestion. The repair steps are decided by our technicians, so we'll stick with their process.
Customer · SMS
Reach for it when a customer tells you how to do a technical job, as it stays polite and avoids a debate about the method.

Let's keep this thread on the launch date. Budget is a separate topic, so let's take it to its own conversation.
Coworker · Chat
Post it in a busy team thread when someone drifts into another topic and you want to move on without calling anyone out.
Examples
Hi all, Thanks for the input on the vendor shortlist. To keep things clear, Nadia's team makes the final vendor choice, and comments go through the weekly planning meeting. Please add your points to the agenda before Tuesday. Best regards, Rowan
Hi Tara, in today's meeting you weighed in on the hiring plan, which Jon and I are deciding for now. Could we take 15 minutes tomorrow to talk about where your input fits best on the team?
What to avoid
- Sarcasm or a line like “with respect” before a put-down will only make things worse.
- Calling out one person in a group thread backfires, so send them a private message instead.
- Their job title, seniority or past mistakes have no place in your argument.
- Inviting input you have no intention of using will come across as false.
- A vague boundary leaves people guessing, so name what you own and where their view can go.
