Saying “sorry for the delay in payment” at work
Why it can fall flat
“sorry for the delay in payment”
Leaves out the cause, and the reader can't tell whether the money has been sent or when it will arrive. The writer usually wants to show they know it was late and give the current status.

Hi Steven, Thank you for your patience with invoice 2087. I know it was due last week, and I'm sorry it ran late on our side. The payment was sent today, and your bank may take a day or two to show it. Please let me know if it hasn't arrived by Monday. Best regards, Hannah
Hi Ana, your expenses claim was paid later than it should have been. It went through today. Tell me if it doesn't show in your account by tomorrow.
What to avoid
- Don't leave out the status, so say whether the payment has been sent.
- A vague “system issue” or “finance” is a weak excuse unless you can explain it in one sentence.
- One clear acknowledgment is enough, so skip piling on apologies.
- Promising a date is risky unless you control it.
- Phrases like “as per my last email” hint that the other person should have chased sooner, so leave them out.
