Saying “I'd like to discuss my salary” at work
Why it can fall flat
“I'd like to discuss my salary”
Your manager may not know if you want a raise, a review or are hinting you might leave, so they guess and often brace. You likely want a calm, planned talk about pay with a reason and a time.
Say this instead
- 01
Could we set up time to talk about my salary? My role has grown since I started, and I'd like to go through what I've taken on and the results.
Boss · Email
Choose this when your role has grown, since it gives a reason and shows you have prepared.
- 02
Hi Blake, could we book 30 minutes in the next couple of weeks to talk about my pay? I'd like to set aside proper time for it.
Boss · Chat
Ask for a proper 30-minute slot this way when a hallway chat would feel too rushed or tense.
- 03
Hi Anil, could we find a time this week to talk about my salary? I'm happy to work around your calendar.
Boss · SMS
Texting suits a boss you already message regularly, and it leaves the timing in their hands.
- 04
Ahead of the review cycle, I'd like to talk about my salary. I've put together a short summary of my work this year and would value your view.
Boss · Email
Send this before reviews are decided so the request fits a natural moment.
- 05
Before we go further, could we talk about the salary range for this role? I'd like to be sure it fits what I'm looking for.
Recruiter / HR · Email
Raise it early in a hiring process so neither side spends time on a mismatch.
- 06
Hi Divya, could we cover pay early on? I'd like to understand the salary range and share what I'm expecting.
Recruiter / HR · Chat
Professional messaging platforms suit this one, and it invites both sides to share numbers.
- 07
Hi Ciaran, could you tell me how salary conversations are usually handled here? I'd like to prepare before I talk to my manager about mine.
Coworker · Chat
Try it with an HR contact or trusted colleague when you are unsure how the process works.
Examples
Hi Yasmin, I'd like to talk about my salary before the review process starts. Since I took over the vendor reports in spring, my role has grown, and I'd welcome the chance to go through what I've taken on and the results. Could we find 30 minutes in the next two weeks? Thanks, Rajesh
Hi Nisha, thanks for the feedback in yesterday's review, it was really useful. I'd like to pick up the salary part we didn't get to. Could we book 20 minutes early next week?
What to avoid
- Opening with “we need to talk” or “it's important” sounds like bad news and puts people on guard.
- Hinting that you might leave, or giving an ultimatum, only makes sense if you truly mean it.
- Comparing your pay to a named colleague's pulls attention from your own work and results, so stay focused on those.
- A hallway or the end of a busy meeting is the wrong place to raise it, so ask for a proper slot.
- Justifying the request with personal costs weakens it, so focus on your role and contribution.
