A kinder way to say “I forgot to do it”
Why it can fall flat
“I forgot to do it”
The word “forgot” in “I forgot to do it” names the lapse but offers no fix and no timing, so it can come across as careless. Usually you want to own the miss and say when it will be done.

Morning Lou, I forgot to update next week's rota. The corrected version will be in the team channel before 10:30. Let me know if it changes any of your shifts.
What to avoid
- Long apologies or excuses bury the fix and make the other person manage your feelings.
- Don't blame other people, your workload or the tools you use.
- Vague timing such as “soon” or “when I get a chance” leaves people guessing, so give a time or a day.
- Saying “I forgot” with no next step leaves the other person to chase you.
- Big promises like “this will never happen again” are ones you cannot guarantee.
