Alternatives to “I don't care” at work
Why it can fall flat
“I don't care”
Most people hear “I don't care” as a sign that they and their question don't matter to you. Usually you mean you have no preference or it isn't yours to decide, so say that plainly.
Say this instead
- 01
I don't have a strong preference on this one, so I'm happy to go with whatever the group decides.
Coworker · Chat
Pick this when a team is choosing between options and you truly have no stake in the outcome.
- 02
I don't have a view on the vendor choice, and I'd rather keep my time on the launch plan. I'll leave that call to you.
Boss · Email
It shows you're guarding your focus while still respecting that the decision matters to someone.
- 03
Either option works for us, so please go with whichever suits your team better.
Client · Email
Clients usually like this one because it states no preference and hands the choice to them.
- 04
Either way is fine with me, so this one is your call.
Someone you manage · Chat
Try it when you want someone you manage to own a small decision instead of waiting on your opinion.
- 05

Customer · SMS
Friendly and flexible for scheduling, it avoids the cold tone of a flat “I don't care”.
- 06
I don't have a preference between the two interview slots, so please book whichever is easier on your side.
Recruiter / HR · Email
It keeps scheduling moving and shows you're easy to book without seeming uninterested.

Coworker · Chat
Step back from office gossip or a dispute that has nothing to do with your work.
- 08
I'm not the right person to weigh in on the seating plan, so I'll leave it with you and the team.
Boss · Chat
Politely decline a decision outside your role without pretending to care about it.
Examples
Hi Aarti, Thanks for asking about the slide template. I don't have a strong preference between the two versions, so please go with whichever you and the design team think works best. I'll focus on getting the numbers ready for Thursday. Best regards, Gavin
Both dates work for me, so I don't mind which one we pick. Go with whatever suits the rest of the team.
What to avoid
- Skip “whatever,” sighs and eye-roll emoji, because the tone will undo any polite wording.
- If you do have an opinion, share it or say you'd rather not weigh in instead of claiming you have none.
- Using “I don't care” when someone raises a real problem, complaint or concern is a mistake, so acknowledge it first.
- Leaving the person with no next step stalls them, so say who decides or that the choice is theirs.
