“Apologies for the delay”: how to say it politely
Why it can fall flat
“apologies for the delay”
It leaves out what the reader actually needs and makes the message about the lateness, and as a stock opener it can read as automatic. Usually you want to acknowledge the wait briefly and get to the useful part.

Casual and warm, this suits a peer who was blocked on your input and tells them they can move on.

Thanks for waiting, Sasha. I've just uploaded the revised slides to the team folder, so you can review them whenever you're ready.
What to avoid
- Skip the long explanation of why you were late unless the reader asked for one.
- Blaming a colleague, a tool or a vague “busy period” for the delay only weakens your message.
- Burying the update or the attachment under several lines of apology wastes the reader's time.
- Promising it won't happen again is risky unless you can truly guarantee it.
- Opening every message with the same apology makes it stop meaning anything.
