Better ways to say “my child is sick”
Why it can fall flat
“my child is sick”
The word “sick” in “my child is sick” gives the news but not what you need or what happens to your work. Most people want to say they will be absent, who can cover anything urgent, and when they will update the other person.
Say this instead
- 01
Hi Naomi, my daughter has a fever, so I need to take today off to look after her. I'll update you this evening on how things stand.
Boss · Chat
Send it first thing in the morning, since it states the absence plainly and names a time for your update.
- 02
Hi Mark, my son is ill and I need to take leave to care for him, likely the next two days; I'll update you tomorrow. The Thursday report draft is in the shared folder.
Boss · Email
A longer absence suits this one, because “likely” keeps the dates honest and the shared folder shows your work is easy to find.
- 03
Hi Catriona, my child isn't well and I can't come in this morning. I'll message you later with a clearer idea of tomorrow.
Boss · SMS
Short on time before a shift? This is brief and leaves the next day open.
- 04
Hey Tegan, my little one is sick, so I'm offline today. Could you cover the 2pm client call? I can send you my notes now.
Coworker · Chat
When a specific task needs covering, this asks for one clear thing and offers your notes in return.
- 05
Hello Ms. Morris, my child is ill, so I'll be away from my desk today. My colleague Yash can help with anything urgent, and I'll reply once I'm back.
Client · Email
A client who expects quick replies gets a named contact and a realistic expectation here.
- 06
Hi all, my son has a fever, so I'm out today. Asha will make calls on anything urgent, and I'll check in this evening.
Someone you manage · Chat
Managers can send this to the team to keep things moving, since it hands decisions to a named person.
- 07
Hello Astrid, my child is ill, so I need to reschedule tomorrow's interview. I'm still very keen on the role and could do Thursday or Friday afternoon if either suits.
Recruiter / HR · Email
With a recruiter mid-process, it asks to move the interview, repeats your interest and offers options.
- 08
Hello Mr. Shah, I have to reschedule our 4pm visit today because my child is sick. Could we move it to tomorrow or Friday?
Customer · SMS
For a same-day change with a customer, it gives the reason in a few words and proposes new times.
Examples
Hi Karen, My daughter has a fever and I need to stay home with her tomorrow. I'll be offline for most of the day, and Ben has the details for the supplier call. I'll update you in the evening on whether I can be back on Friday. Thanks, Asha
Morning Rory, my son woke up with a fever, so I'm taking a sick day to look after him. I'll check in around 4 if anything urgent comes up.
What to avoid
- Promising a firm return date when you can't be sure how long your child will be ill.
- Long medical details nobody asked for only add noise to the message.
- Repeated apologies make a normal absence sound like a failure.
- Telling people only after your start time has passed leaves them scrambling.
- Who can handle urgent work while you are away should never be left out.
