Better ways to say “let's not go down a rabbit hole”
Why it can fall flat
“let's not go down a rabbit hole”
Your colleague may hear it as you calling their point a pointless tangent, since the phrase never says where their idea fits. The goal is to keep the discussion on track without brushing anyone off.
Say this instead
- 01
I think that's a separate topic from what we need to settle today. Can we pick it up after the meeting?
Coworker · Chat
Fits a live discussion because it calls the topic separate without suggesting it is unimportant.
- 02
To hit the deadline, I'd suggest we stay with the launch plan for now and look at the wider questions separately.
Boss · Email
Ties the boundary to a shared deadline, so it reads as protecting the goal rather than shutting down ideas.
- 03
Thank you for raising the other point. Let's note it so we can give it proper time in a separate conversation, and keep today's discussion on the delivery date.
Client · Email
Acknowledges the client's concern and gives it its own space, which keeps the tone respectful.
- 04
Let's stick to the main issue for now. The rest can wait for a separate conversation.
Someone you manage · Chat
Stays clear and calm when someone you manage drifts into side issues during a time-sensitive task.
- 05
I'd like to cover the role's responsibilities and pay range first, before we get into anything else.
Recruiter / HR · Chat
Sets your priorities early so the call doesn't wander into questions you aren't ready for.
- 06
Hi Marlowe, I'd like to sort the billing error first. The other question is a separate matter, so please send it as a new request.
Customer · SMS
Helps when a customer bundles several issues and you need to fix one properly before the next.
- 07
I'd rather keep this thread to the budget figures. The org chart question deserves its own discussion.
Coworker · Email
Keeps a long email thread from branching while showing the other question is taken seriously.
- 08
Can we narrow this to the one decision we need to make today?
Boss · Chat
Offers a light, collaborative way to refocus a meeting when several issues are being raised at once.
Examples
Hi Nikhil, Thanks for the detailed notes on the vendor options. For Friday's call, I'd like us to focus only on the contract end date. The full vendor comparison deserves its own meeting, so could you suggest a time next week? Best, Maureen
That's worth a proper discussion, but not in this stand-up. Can you add it to the agenda for Thursday's design review?
What to avoid
- Calling someone's point a tangent or a rabbit hole to their face.
- Saying “that's not relevant” is risky, so say it belongs in a separate conversation instead.
- Promising to discuss it later when you don't intend to.
- Leaving the topic homeless, when you can say where or when it can be raised.
- Sarcasm or sighing as you redirect the conversation.
