Better ways to say “improve your time management”
Why it can fall flat
“improve your time management”
Improve sounds like a verdict on their character, with no example or next step, so the other person is likely to get defensive. Specific work arriving on time, or a clear plan for how it will, is what you actually want.

A few recent tasks came in after the deadline. Can we look at how you plan your week and work out what's getting in the way?
Someone you manage · Chat
Fits a one-to-one chat because it names the problem and invites them to explain instead of labeling them.
- 02
I need work to arrive on the agreed date. For the next few weeks, please send me a short plan on Monday and flag any risk to a deadline as soon as you see it.
Someone you manage · Email
Suits repeated lateness, since it states the expectation and gives a concrete habit to follow.
- 03
When your part arrives late, I have less time to review it. Could you send it by Wednesday noon so I can plan around it?
Coworker · Chat
Peers tend to respond well because it explains the effect on you and asks for a specific time.

Hi Tamara, could we start team meetings on time? When they start late, everything after them gets pushed back. Thanks.
Coworker · Email
A recurring habit that affects the whole team fits here, since it focuses on the schedule rather than one person.
- 05
Requests are reaching me late in the day, which makes it hard to plan. Could we agree on a cut-off time, or could you tell me each morning which task comes first?
Boss · Email
Raising a timing problem with your manager goes over better as a request for a working agreement than as criticism.

To keep the launch date, we need your feedback by Friday. If it comes later, the date will move. Shall I book a short review slot for Thursday?
Client · Email
Pick this when a client's delays affect the schedule, because it is firm and factual and offers an easy way to stay on track.

Hi Dakota, the report was due at 5 and I haven't received it. Please send it tonight or tell me what's blocking you.

A missed same-day deadline is the right moment, when you need a quick answer and the matter is urgent.
Examples
Hi Andrew, I wanted to talk about the last few weekly summaries, which reached me after the Friday deadline. I need them by 3 pm so I can pass them on before the end of the day. Could you let me know what is getting in the way, so we can plan a way to fix it? Thanks, Maria
Hi Andrew, the last few summaries came in after Friday's deadline. Do you have 10 minutes today to go through what's getting in the way and agree on a way to get them to me by 3 pm?
What to avoid
- Calling someone “bad at time management” is a label, so describe the missed deadline or late handoff instead.
- Feedback without a specific example and a date leaves the person guessing what you mean.
- Sarcasm about lateness, such as “nice of you to join us”, will only make them defensive.
- Raising it in a group chat or in front of others turns a work issue into embarrassment.
- Leaving out what you need next means nothing changes, so say the date, time or habit you expect.
