Saying “I quit” at work
Why it can fall flat
“I quit”
People usually say “I quit” in a heated moment or when they have already made up their mind, and it sounds abrupt and final, like walking out. Most writers want to state clearly that they are leaving, give a last day and keep the relationship intact.

Hi Hayden, do you have ten minutes today? I'd like to talk to you about my role, and I'd rather do it in person or on a call.

Hi Courtney, I'd like to talk to you about my role. Would ten minutes today work?
What to avoid
- Resigning by chat or text is a poor choice unless that is genuinely the only way to reach your manager.
- Listing grievances in the resignation message backfires, so save feedback for an exit conversation if you choose to give it.
- Telling colleagues or clients before your manager has heard it from you creates avoidable trouble.
- Using “I quit” as a threat or ultimatum is risky unless you are certain you mean it.
- Sending a resignation while you are angry is a mistake, so wait until you can write it calmly.
