Why it can fall flat
“I missed the target”
Saying “I missed the target” hides how big the gap is, why it happened and what happens next, so listeners fill in the worst case. A better move is to own the miss and show that you have it under control.

Hi Kelsey, We didn't hit the target of 40 completed onboarding calls this month. We finished 31, mainly because three client start dates moved. I'll book the remaining nine for next week and send you a status update on Monday morning. Best regards, Blake
Quick update: we came in at 31 of the 40 calls we aimed for this month. The delay came from three clients moving their start dates. I'll have the other nine booked by Monday, and I can share the list if useful.
What to avoid
- Leaving the sentence by itself is weak, so add the size of the gap and the next step in the same message.
- Vague excuses such as “things got busy” or “it was out of my hands” make the miss sound worse.
- Blaming a named person or team in writing backfires, so stick to what happened and what changes.
- A new date you aren't sure you can keep only sets up a second miss.
- Waiting until someone asks costs you trust, so tell people as soon as you know.
