“I can't talk right now”: how to say it politely
Why it can fall flat
“I can't talk right now”
Someone who hears “I can't talk right now” with no reason or next step may feel brushed off. Usually you mean that you're busy now but still want to help.

Examples
Hi Amelia, Thanks for your message. I'm in back-to-back meetings today and can't talk by phone. Could you send the main points by email? If it really needs a conversation, I have space on Thursday between 10 and 11. Best wishes, Patrick
Hey Jody, I'm in the middle of something and can't talk right now. Could you drop the details here? I'll read them as soon as I'm free.
What to avoid
- A bare “Can't talk” with nothing else leaves the other person guessing.
- Long excuses or invented stories are unnecessary, since one short reason is enough.
- Asking “What is it?” in a sharp tone can make you sound annoyed.
- Ignoring the message completely is worse than a quick holding reply.
- Proposing a time you already know you won't be free sets up a second disappointment.
